Here is a simple guide for those wishing to get a food truck permit in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Dubai
Regulating and issuing food truck permits in Dubai comes under the Dubai Municipality's authority.
Non-mobile food truck permits are issued annually for trucks that are in the same site throughout the year. Here is the process to get a food truck permit in the bustling city.
Requirements
- The application for the event must be filed at least three working days before the event starts.
- In the case of non-event food trucks, business licences should be issued in Dubai and the facilities should be located in the city as well.
- Those who want to apply for a non-mobile food truck, there should be a formal space contract with the owner of the approved location. This needs to be uploaded when applying for the permit.
In the case of mobile food trucks, where the permit is for an event, the following requirements must be met:
- The food facility and the suppliers shall have adequate and licensed facilities to source, transport, store, prepare and display food safely as per Dubai's Food Code.
- Layout and floor plan of the food preparation area must be suitable to prevent contamination of food.
- Depending on the nature of activity, there shall be sufficient facilities to prepare, store and display food.
- Only licensed food establishments with a food inspection grade of A, B or C with no critical or major violations can obtain the permit.
- Food establishments from emirates other than Dubai must provide a copy of the trade license along with the NOC from the concerned food control authority in their respective city.

- If the food truck is a part of a larger food business entity, it should be registered on FoodWatch as a sub-entity under the main business entity.

- List of foods, food handlers, preparation area, equipment and layout data must be available on the platform's database.

Important things to keep in mind
It is crucial to remember the following when applying for an annual permit.
- Before applying for the permit, applicants must obtain the approval of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, or from ADNOC, or from the companies investing in the site allocated by the municipality, regarding the place to park the mobile food cart.
- Each commercial licence is only allowed to issue three mobile vehicles.
- The trade name must be written in Arabic exactly as what is written in the commercial licence. It must not be smaller in size than what is written in English.
- Applicants must fill out the vehicle or vehicle specifications form.
- The cart or vehicle chosen must be manufactured to be used in food selling activity.
- In the case that there is a trademark, it must be approved by the Ministry of Economy before putting it on the cart.
- Applicants must submit a letter from the manufacturer explaining all the information and specifications mentioned in the table.
- Any advertisements displayed on mobile vehicles must not include anything that might affect religious rituals, customs and social values. These ads must also not show explicit comparison with other similar products or attack or insult them.
- These ads are also not permitted to display exaggerated formulas or phrases that the advertiser cannot prove, such as the words 'exclusively', 'new' and 'for the first time'.
What is prohibited when applying for the service annual permit?
- Those with truck permits are not allowed to close any public road.
- It is not allowed to carry out the activity through mobile vehicles or cars without obtaining the final permit from the Department of Economic Development.
- Permit holders are not permitted to push or encourage other drivers to obstruct traffic.
- Food vehicle owners are not allowed to obstruct traffic or place barriers that hinder the movement of vehicles on the public road.
- They are not permitted to place outdoor chairs or tables for the public.
