The mystery over the sudden death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Junior Indian Minister for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor has thickened with the authorities at the super speciality hospital where she undergone treatment before her death ruling out any life threatening disease to her.
The hospital medical board that met here on Saturday concluded that the findings of a series of tests she underwent in the hospital from January 12 to 14 did not indicate any condition that could cause the sudden death, said Vice-Chairman Dr G Vijayaraghavan and Director E M Najeeb. They, however, refused to divulge details of her disease and the medicines given to her, citing doctor-patient confidentiality and the legal issues thrown up by her death at a five star hotel in New Delhi on Friday. The medical board would hand over the details to the police if they make a proper request.
Vijaraghavan, a prominent cardiologist who headed the medical board, said the news regarding the sudden death of Sunanda had come as a big shock to him.
“She had left the hospital in a healthy and joyful state. Following the discharge, she had even taken part in a festival at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the state capital. Sunanda had agreed to return to the hospital on January 21 for a follow-up,” he added.
The preliminary finding of the postmortem suggesting ‘sudden unnatural death’ confirms that of the KIMS medical board. However, they are at variance with condition described by Sunanda herself and Tharoor’s personal staff.
Sunanda said in one of her last tweets on Friday: “Got so many issues diagnosed in KIMS that now who knows when I got 2 go with joy Hastay hua jayegay” (will go smiling). A spokesman of Tharoor here said Sunanda was sick for some time. She was very weak when she left for Delhi on Thursday. He said she had used a stretcher and wheel chair to board the aircraft.
Dr Vijayaraghavan and Najeeb refused to comment on these statements. They said that the results of the tests they conducted did not show that she suffered from any serious illnesses and she was given only simple medicines. Detailed information on her medical condition was passed on to Sunanda and her husband, the duo said.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the death as well as Sunanda’s revelations about the federal minister’s relations with Pakistan journalist Mehr Tarar, whom she called an agent of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI).
Terming the death mysterious, party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said a detailed probe was required to unravel the mystery. He expressed concern over the supporters of Shashi Tharoor to turn the death into a case of natural death.
