“Last year our growth rate was about 7.3 per cent and we have handled nearly 10 million passengers in 2009. This year we will cross the milestone of ten million passengers by significant levels,’’ Ahmed told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Global Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Forum organised jointly by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) of the United Nations and the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE.

“We will also see more airlines coming to Abu Dhabi this year. Several airlines have expressed their desire to operate from Abu Dhabi. We have over 59 airlines operating from Abu Dhabi currently. I can’t tell you how many new airlines are likely to launch services from Abu Dhabi and which are they. We cannot make announcements on behalf of those airlines,’’ he said.

“We are improving the infrastructure at the airport accommodating the expected increase in both the passengers and airlines. We are making all out efforts to make air travel through our airport a pleasant experience,” he said.

According to Ahmed Abu Dhabi airport is among the top airports in the world in terms of quick and effective handling of luggage. “We have been successful in promptly delivering 97 per cent of the luggage that are part of our cargo in 2009, and this is considered an excellent level even internationally. In previous year the success rate was 96 per cent. The first luggage bag is on the conveyor belt within 15 minutes of the landing of the aircraft in our airport.’’

“We have also brought down the time required for people to enter the airport building after the aircraft lands at the airport, and for reaching the aircraft for boarding. The immigration and customs procedures have also been spedup at the airport,’’ Ahmed said.
