The Dubai-based MAN subsidiary, in cooperation with local importer Darwish Bin Ahmed & Sons Company, was able to land the contract from the DoT, comprising a total of 400 low-floor and intercity buses worth a three-figure million euro sum.
The German engineering company sees this as another major success for its international growth strategy, particularly in the Middle East.
The order comprises a total 400 low-floor intercity buses, all equipped with powerful air-conditioning, with MAN’s D20 Common Rail engines and the maintenance and additive-free MAN Pure Diesel exhaust-emissions treatment system.
Following a presentation of the prototype vehicles, the DoT expressed themselves enthusiastically regarding design and technology.
“We see MAN as a reliable and innovative partner for our extensive local public transport system projects, which we are planning to expand even further,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Hameli, General Manager of the Transportation Office of the DoT.
At the end of 2010, Abu Dhabi expects to have a population of 1.5 million, and in 2030 it will be as high as 3.5 million.
The new bus system, which will be one of the most modern in the world, includes computer-operated information systems and control centres, 37 new bus terminals, six big depots as well as fully air-conditionedbus stops.
Lanes exclusively for buses are already being planned for the inner city in order to speed up traffic.
“This major order from our discriminating customer in the Middle East is impressive confirmation of the globally-recognised technical competence and reliability of our engines and buses,” said Peter Erichreineke, Director of Sales and Marketing at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG.
For MAN Nutzfahrzeuge, the Middle East market is an important building block in its strategy of international growth for the Bus business. Buses were delivered to Qatar for the first time in 2006. In 2007, the first major order for Dubai was closed.
The order from Abu Dhabi is thus the third big milestone in the very positive development of the market.
