The group sold 15,959 BMW and MINI vehicles across 14 importers in the region, underscoring the importance and strength of the Middle East market despite the current global economic crisis, said Phil Horton, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East.

Dubai topped in sales with 4,221 units followed by Abu Dhabi with 2,463 units and Saudi Arabia 2,004 units.

“A five per cent growth during these challenging economic conditions is a significant achievement and in line with our expectations given the softening of demand during the second half of the year. The commitment of our importers coupled with new models launched in 2008 have helped our sales figures remain positive,” he said.

“The X6 Sports Activity Coupe, re-styled 3 Series, M3, 1 Series and MINI Clubman have all helped contribute to our growth.2009 will be challenging but the underlying economic fundamentals in the Middle East are stronger than many other parts of the world, and consumer demand in the luxury segment still remains healthy. With our all-new 7 Series now starting to reach importers in numbers, we are optimistic that 2009 will be another good year.”

Another area of business that saw growth for BMW Group Middle East was BMW Premium Selection, the company’s used-car programme that offers customers peace-of-mind motoring as if they were purchasing a new BMW. 1,512 BMW vehicles were sold through BMW Premium Selection in eight importer markets.

On a worldwide level, BMW Group is taking action across all its business areas to meet the challenges faced by the current market climate.
