SHARJAH - The total volume of containers handled by ports in the emirate of Sharjah stood at 2.4 million 20-foot (TEU) equivalent units during year 2008, achieving an impressive 25 per cent growth over the preceding year, revealed the figures issued by the Sharjah Sea Ports and Customs Department.

The growth in the container handling is mainly attributed to additional activity at the Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT), which alone handled 2,112,441 (TEU) during last year.

The Sharjah Container Terminal (SCT) also saw a steady increase in container handling during this period.

The major difference in client portfolio between the two ports is best explained by the location of the two facilities within the Sharjah emirate. To access SCT, ships have to pass through the Straits of Hormuz, while KCT lies entirely on the Gulf of Oman.

Director-general of the Sharjah Sea Ports and Customs Department Rashid Al Leem attributed this growth to the enormous development in infrastructure at both the ports, especially the expansion of the Khorfakkan sea port.

KCT’s logistic facilities were enhanced by the most modern equipment, he noted.

Al Leem said that the seaports in the emirate get continuous support and attention from the emirate’s government as they represent one of the prime constituents of the economy.

He said that the development projects will continue at the three ports in the emirate, namely the Port Khalid in the city, the Khorfakkan sea port and the port of Hamriya.
