The sales boost was driven by a pick up in airport traffic in the first quarter.
Dubai airport, the world’s fastest growing in terms of international passengers among the top 30 airports, last month said passenger traffic rose 22.6 percent in February, with the airport handling a total of 3,640,323 passengers versus 2,969,569 passengers during the same month in 2009.
February’s strong growth follows record monthly passenger traffic of over 3.8 million in January, bringing the year-to-date passenger throughput to 7,501,848 up 19.7 per cent over the corresponding period in 2009.
Perfumes and gold continued to be among the top selling categories at DDF in the first quarter.
Perfume sales reached over Dhs150m ($41.7m) representing an increase of 23 per cent while Gold sales increased by 22 per cent to Dhs123m ($34m) in the first quarter.
DDF said fragrances remained the best-selling product category, recording a 23 per cent sales increase to reach Dh150 million, followed by gold, up 22 per cent, with sales of Dh123 million in the first three months of the year. Confectionary sales also continued to grow in the early part of 2010, up by 20 per cent to Dh88 million, while sales of electronic products grew by 15 per cent to reach Dh80 million. The watches and clocks category was up by 41 per cent. “Our year-end sales in 2009 showed an increase of 3.76 per cent. However, 2009 was a difficult year for all retailers and for many it was a time to take stock,” said DDF managing director Colm McLoughlin.
“From the second half of last year and the first quarter of 2010, we have definitely seen an increase in consumer spending across all categories, including the high-end products, and we are optimistic that this year will be a record year for Dubai Duty Free,” he said.
Recruitment at Dubai Duty Free continued apace in the first quarter of 2010 with 229 new sales assistants appointed. A recent exhibitor at the UAE Careers Fair, Dubai Duty Free has an ongoing policy of recruiting UAE nationals and will continue with its rigorous recruitment plans for the remainder of the year, a DDF statement said. — issacjohn@khaleejtimes.com
