This figure equals the operation’s first full year of sales in 1984.

It recorded 54 per cent higher than the former record day set last year at the same time.

Sales from the 130,000-plus transactions represents a massive 582 per cent increase above the average daily sales for the year.

A special 25 per cent discount offer to mark the operation’s Silver jubilee resulted in a massive spending spree at Dubai International Airport that began at midnight on 19th December and continued throughout the day until midnight on the 20th.

“The anniversary discount offer, which began with Dubai Duty Free’s 20th anniversary in 2003 proved to be so popular with travellers, some of whom book their flights in order to shop on that day,” said Dubai Duty Free Managing Director, Colm McLoughlin.

Many elated travellers took advantage of the discount offer.

The Millennium Millionaire draw in Series 91 was conducted along with the 25th anniversary celebrations that saw a Greek national, Christos Vouzounerakis, who purchased a ticket from the Internet on October 20, declared the winner.

Among those who witnessed this were Loughlin accompanied by George Horan the Deputy director of DDF along with other senior officials.

A presentation of $1 million was also made to the Millennium Millionaire in Series 90, Diederick J. Opperman, followed by the announcement of three new winners in the Finest Surprise Promotion draw namely — Khalid Alshaer, winning a Jaguar XK8 150 Coupe, Ashutosh Chaudhary, winner of a luxurious Bentley Continental, and Akiko Watanabe, winning a Harley Davidson. A presentation was also made to an earlier car winner, Jasem Behbehani, who won a BMW 750Li Black.

Dubai Duty Free’s employees enjoyed the Anniversary celebrations with a special Staff Finest Surprise draw which resulted in a total of Dhs130,000 being won by staff.

Dubai Duty Free currently employs almost 3,700 staff and of the original 100 staff, 59 remain in active service.
