A recent survey by YouGov, a market research company, shows that 65 per cent of nearly 2,000 business professionals across the region believe that Dubai is the most innovative city in the region. Only nine per cent of the respondents chose Abu Dhabi and six per cent selected Saudi Arabia.

“There are a great many innovative business and government concepts in action in other cities within the GCC, but Dubai still holds the reputation as the leader in this area,” said Joanna Longworth, chief marketing officer of YouGov. The respondents, mainly from Middle East and North Africa region, associated innovation with intelligence, newness, improvement and creativity. However, the participants did not consider the Middle East as place which fosters innovation. About 33 per cent of participants believed that Japan as the most innovative country, a quarter felt it was China and 16 per cent voted for the USA. Only two per cent selected Middle East as the most innovative region.

According to YouGov, the survey was designed along with Mangrove Consulting to investigate how innovation was viewed by businesses. About 93 per cent of respondents said that innovation is very important or somewhat important to a company’s success. According to the findings, the real drivers of innovation are leadership and organisational structure. For Nick Pye of Mangrove Consulting, the main challenge to innovation in this region is not creativity but lack of appropriate organisational structure.

“Very few companies appear to have any formal process when it comes to turning ideas into new products, services and businesses,” he said.
