According to traffic figures released by the Abu Dhabi Airport Company, or ADAC, on Saturday, the airport has bucked the global recessionary trend and recorded a seven per cent increase in passenger traffic during the first 10 months of this year compared to the same period last year.

The number of passengers travelled through the airport was 7.9 million till October 31 this year, while the figure was 7.4 million in the same period last year. The airport recorded a 2.8 per cent growth in passenger traffic in October this year to 797000 from 776000 recorded in October 2008. “The traffic over the three race-days of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009 event peaked at an 18 per cent increase, against the same dates last year. The F1 weekend also had a significant impact on cargo figures recorded, for the month, due to the high volume of the event-related collateral shipped by air freight,” a Press statement said.

“The inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009 was a fantastic result for all our teams at Abu Dhabi International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport, and clearly demonstrated ADAC’s operational abilities are complemented by its offering of world-class facilities and infrastructure, across the board,” the statement said said quoting Ahmed Al Haddabi, Senior Vice-president of Airport Operations at ADAC.

Passenger numbers from India, Abu Dhabi International’s largest single market, continued to rise in October, with a 6.6 per cent increase; the UK moving up a place to become the airport’s second largest market for the month, having posted a 13.3 per cent increase in traffic. Pakistan retained a leading position, in the number three slot, with the Saudi market in fourth, the statement said.
