Phase 1 of Stage 1A is the offshore part of the proposed Khalifa Port which will also have an industrial zone. The phase I comprises of a 3.5 sq km port island, ADPC officials told a group of visiting journalists on Monday. The entire cargo operations currently going on at the Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi will be shifted to the Khalifa port when it becomes operational. The journalists had accompanied the representatives of some companies who at present import and export their cargo through the Zayed Port. “The work on the first phase of the project is on track and the island platform has been reclaimed using seabed material. Dredging work has created a 16 metre deep harbour basin and 12 km long approach channel. It is planned that future development stages will expand the offshore port facilities to nearly 15 sqkm,” officials from the corporate communication department of ADPC said. The Khalifa Port will create a gateway for the import and export of raw materials and finished products associated with the adjacent Industrial Zone, which is being developed concurrently with the port.
