“To put that into perspective, that amount is larger than the 2008 GDP of the US,” Dr Omar bin Sulaiman said on Tuesday.

Quoting the research note, Dr Sulaiman, speaking at the Banking Outlook Middle East 2009 conference, said that figure assumed a modest price of oil at $50 per barrel and gas at $9 per million BTU. However, if oil prices were to average $100 per barrel and gas $15, the present value of the GCC energy reserves would be $ 37.7 trillion —equal to the world’s total stock market capitalisation at the end of 2008, Dr Sulaiman said.
