“We have decided not to divulge the details of our negotiations with the Chinese government on the issue at this stage. But something is expected soon,’’ Schmidt told a media roundtable on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Media Summit.
Asked whether the outcome of the discussions between China and Google would be contingent on the US moves to take up the complaint of Chinese censorship with the WTO dispute redressal mechanisms, he said, “Google’s negotiations with the Chinese Government are independent of what the US Government is doing with China. That is between the US Government and the American Government. We are not guided by those negotiations.’’
He said Google would not cooperate with the active censorship efforts of the Chinese government on the Internet platforms. The objective of the hackers on Google was also to violate the privacy of the some of the individuals who were associated with the human rights movements in China.
On Iran he said the Google wanted the US policy of banning internet operations in Iran to be reviewed, as providing free access to information to people would be an important contribution to strengthen democracy in any country.
Asked about the censorship threats that Google faced in the Gulf countries, Mohammed Gawdat, Managing Director of the SEEMEA region of Google said, contrary to the perceptions of many Google did not face any major censorship issues with the Governments in the region. “I find by and large the governments in the region were reasonable.’’
