The Italians have come up with the idea of integrated solar tiles that come in many colours.
“This is a new product — solar tiles made of ceramic, which nobody else does,” said Amirabbas Sadeghizadeh, project manager of Solar Technology Centre (STC).
The tiles were first launched in Europe two months ago and now they are being exhibited for the first time in the UAE at the ongoing World Future Energy Summit.
“The advantage of ceramic is that it’s a very strong and versatile material. You can place the tiles on the roof, on walls or on the pavements and they will not be damaged by extreme temperatures or other conditions,” Sadeghizadeh told Khaleej Times.
He also pointed out that ceramic is much cheaper than other type of solar tiles.
The ceramic solar tiles were designed by System Photonics, an Italian energy design company, and a partner of STC.
Traditionally, both solar tiles and panels come in black, navy blue or other dark shade of colour, the reason being that black and dark colours are best for attracting sunlight.
Still, System Photonics boldly went, where other solar companies try to avoid — pretty coloured solar tiles.
“For the ‘natural’ black or dark coloured tiles there is a high efficiency of 80 to 90 per cent energy output,” said Sadeghizadeh.
“In these coloured polycrystalline tiles you only loose one to two per cent.” All in all, there are 13 different colours available. The ceramic tiles, which can be easily integrated in any building or pavement, use just a three millimetre thick ceramic sheet as a base and they come with a 25 years power performance warranty and 10 years warranty for manufacturing defects.
