Berthed at Port Rashid from December 26 to January 2, the arrival of the aircraft carrier is seen as a sign of growing cooperation between Italy and the UAE. Led by aircraft carrier Cavour, called the thunder bearer of the Italian navy, the group of ships left Italy on November 12, 2013 to spur cooperation with allied navies. The Cavour will showcase all the best practices of the Made in Italy and the activities of humanitarian organisations. The fleet of ships will visit several countries in the Arabian Gulf and Africa.

The mission, which was in the UAE capital earlier this month, was visited by Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, among other dignitaries. In Dubai, visitors can tour the carrier on certain dates after registering for the event online, the details of which can be found on the Facebook page of Italy’s Consulate General in Dubai.

“This is a unique event in which a naval group of four ships are in Dubai as part of the large Italian mission to enhance our collaboration and cooperation with the UAE Navy. Besides showcasing Italian excellence in the naval and aircraft sectors, there will be an exhibition highlighting the cultural power of Italy, like our restoration of archeological artifacts. An exhibition of Italian furniture is also planned,” Giovanni Favilli, Consul General of Italy in Dubai told Khaleej Times.

The event will feature an exhibit on the Expo 2015 taking place in Milan, Italy between May 1 and October 31, 2015. “Expo 2020 is six years away but there is just one and a half year to go for the Expo 2015 in Italy. Cavour is going to display the country’s preparedness for this important event with a view to foster a strong relationship between Expo 2015 in Italy and Expo 2020 in the UAE since these expositions are about showcasing the country. We believe that Expo 2020 in Dubai will be the best ever universal exposition,” Favilli noted.

There will be a number of side events on the carrier including an expo of Italian furniture. People can also visit a charity event onboard the ship where volunteers from Operation Smile, a children’s charity that treats facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates, and the Francesca Rava Foundation, a children’s rights NGO are available.

Cavour is arriving at a time when the cultural and economic ties between Italy and UAE are growing at a phenomenonal rate. As mutual exchange and travel between the two countries reaches an all time high, the presence of more than 10,000 Italian expatriates in the UAE is adding to the cultural exchange. With the latest project, the Italians are attempting to illustrate the country’s economic prowess with its quality products and cultural appeal.
