The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has announced the installation of 100 solar-powered lamp posts in the Yarmouk District of Khor Fakkan, as part of its plans to replace traditional street lighting with a solar-powered system on all the roads of the emirate.
Traditional bulbs will be replaced with energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs to protect the environment and assure the project's sustainability.
Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of the Sewa, affirmed the authority's commitment to ration power consumption and conserve the environment and natural resources by adopting the latest technological and eco-friendly systems.
"The Sewa is using eco-friendly, energy-efficiency lamps and lighting solutions as part of its policy of using renewable energy and ensuring optimum utilisation of resources, in compliance with energy conservation principles of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and International Standardisation Organisation's ISO:50001, which promotes using energy efficiently to help organisations save money, as well as conserve resources and tackle climate change," Dr Al Leem added.
"ISO:50001 supports organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently, through the development of an energy management system."
Currently, 1,200 lamp posts have been installed throughout the emirate, he noted.
The solar lighting projects will be carried out in most parts of the emirate, particularly on highways and residential areas.
"The move supports SEWA's sustainable development strategy and its efforts to implement the rational use of energy and water, spread awareness on saving the environment, and conserve resources for generations to come," he added.
