Sharjah Airport Passenger Traffic Up 22pc in 2008

SHARJAH - Sharjah International Airport recorded an impressive 5,280,445 passengers in 2008, up by 22.11 per cent compared to 2007 where it registered 4,320,313 passengers.

According to the statistical report released by the Airport, aircraft traffic increased in the same period by 18.81 per cent, from 51,314 flights in 2007 to 60,965 in 2008.

Cargo handling, on the other hand, rose by 2.86 per cent to 586,700 tonnes in 2008 against 4,570,000 tonnes in 2007.

Sea-air cargo handling soared 10. 43 per cent to 48,800 tonnes against 44,200 tonnes in 2007.

Dr. Ghanem Al Hagiri, Director-general of the Sharjah Airport Authority, said that “such impressive records reflect distinguished the position of the Sharjah International Airport as one of the pioneer airports in the region, as well as its ability to deal with the latest developments in the aviation industry efficiently.”

He added that the Airport has succeeded to woo cargo and passenger aviation companies, a move that shows strength of the national economy, citing success being scored by Air Arabia.
