The agency released its seizures and confiscations report for 2009, highlighting the activities of the agency that has effectively stopped the contrabands from entering into the emirate. It did not give figures to compare its performance with previous years.

The seizures included narcotics, lasers, shot guns, air guns, articles used by magicians, pan or betel leaves, tobacco and materials used in witchcraft.

Saeed Ahmed Abdullah Al Muhairi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Customs, said that his agency has installed advanced security systems at strategic checkpoint and entry points, including the Z (X-Ray) Control System.

He said that the Abu Dhabi International Airport witnessed the largest number of seizures last year, including a case of 24.13 kilogrammes of heroin.

Most of the drugs seized at Abu Dhabi Airport accounted for 74 per cent of the total seizures at all Abu Dhabi Customs centres combined. The department made 24 seizures of weapons in 2009 ranging between bullets, fire/air guns and related equipments.
