Delivering a talk here late on Wednesday Chu expressed great appreciation for the initiatives launched by the UAE Government in the renewable energy area through the Masdar City project, and disclosed that talks were already on identify the nature of collaboration between the US Department ofEnergy and Masdar.

He was optimistic on the future of initiatives to reduce carbon emission and carrying forward the deals arrived at the Copenhagen Summit on climate change. More countries would soon recognise the threats of global warming and the importance of reducing carbon emission, through the more efficient use of energy and development of alternative energy. He said even though the Obama Administration has allocated only $ 80 billion for the development of renewable energy and $ 8 billion for innovation, these amounts were meant as ‘stimulus’ to set in motion the innovation engine. “I’m confident that more and more entities will come forward to develop the renewables as they recognise the importance and advantages,’’ Chu said.

He said oil would continue as a major source of fuel for some more time especially in the transportation sector. The demand of oil is likely to increase in the coming years and the oil producing the countries will have to invest more to develop production capacities.
