Consumers normally take photos using smartphones nowadays, thanks to more innovation put into these devices and the fact that they're convenient to carry around. But this still would not measure up to what actual cameras can do - and this is where compact snappers play a rather underrated role.
"In the compact camera segment, to be honest, we see a declining trend. But in the premium compact segment, we see it growing," Murat Gebeceli, general manager of product marketing at Sony Middle East and Africa, told Khaleej Times.
"This means photographers are looking for devices that are pocket-sized yet deliver high-quality images."
Gebeceli was speaking during the launch of Sony's new premium compact camera, the RX100 VI, in Dubai. The RX100 VI boasts of refreshed specs, including improved zoom, quicker transfer of files, better 4K video recording and the world's fastest auto-focus speed.
More users are now finding smartphone cameras to be convenient. But for certain people - bloggers, vloggers, influencers and the like, those who use social media to connect - a dedicated camera fulfills their needs more for various reasons, such as better image quality and professional-grade videos.
"Whenever we do a survey we see that the majority of the users [of compact cameras] are bloggers," Gebeceli says.
"Because of the increasing impact of social media - YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc - they start to heavily use compact cameras, considering the fact that smartphones still have limitations like storage, quality and battery." This would also depend on what one is covering; bloggers on food may prefer a camera whose results have colours popping out, while travel influencers may opt for one that has sturdy zoom and stabilisation capabilities.
That doesn't stop there: even professional photographers using high-end DLSR cameras and the like also consider getting a compact camera, Gebeceli added, should the need arise when they don't or can't have their bulky equipment in tow.
This, therefore, means that compact cameras are not eating up market share; each have their own strengths, and would actually complement each other.
"The end-user profile and usage of camera is slightly different. professionals use a compact camera as a second device," Gebeceli said.
