Harshit Agarwal of India won the Elite Series men's singles title at the 39th ISC Open APEX badminton tournament when he beat UAE-based Indonesian coach Imam Adi Kusuma, the Super Series champion earlier during the week, 21-11, 21-11 at the India Scial and Cultural Club, Abu Dhabi.
On Friday, Agarwal continued his superb control and form from the semifinal stage, where he defeated Anup Sridhar from India 21-6, 21-14. Sridhar is Agarwal's mentor in at Tom's Badminton Academy, Benguluru. Kusuma reached the title round defeating India's Chirag Sen 18-21, 21-17, 21-18 which in 66 minutes, earlier in the day.
"I participated in the India Club Open last year in Dubai and this is my first time playing in Abu Dhabi and it is a wonderful feeling to win a tournament of international level. Beating Anup Sridhar, my coach, in the semifinals, which is my first win over him, gave me more confidence to play the finals," said Agarwal.
The Elite Series men's doubles final saw the Malaysian pair of Muhamed Hafiz and Mohammed Razif defeat India's Rupesh Kumar and Shivam Sharma 21-15, 21-17 which was witnessed by hundreds of badminton followers in the UAE. In the semis, Hafiz and Razif downed teammates Muhamed Hafizi and Mohammed Zakry 21-15, 21-19 while Kumar and Sharma ousted Sridhar and Chirag Sen 21-17, 21-18.
Agarwal took home a cash prize of Dh4,000 while Hafiz and Razif received a cheque for Dh5,000.
