Brazilian attacker Kaio Felipe Goncalves became Laurent Banide’s first signing as Al Wasl manager on Tuesday after penning a long-term deal from Japanese outfit Yokohama FC.
The 25-year-old, who is more commonly known as “Kaio,” replaces compatriot Jussie at Zabeel Stadium after the latter’s six-month loan contract here ran out at the end of the season just done.

Kaio’s arrival, alongside the expected retainment of Argentine midfileder Mariano Donda, means Banide has two foreign signings left from a permitted quota of four – one of whom must be Asian under Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rules. “I’m good friends with Fernandinho and Ricardo Oliveira at Al Jazira, as well as Leo Lima (at Al Nasr),” Kaio explained.
“I asked them about the league here after what I had seen and they said: ‘You will find good potential and support in the UAE.’
“I had two offers from Europe – one from Italy and one from Russia – and I had two other offers from UAE clubs, but I have chosen Al Wasl. I’d like to adapt with the team, I have my own style and I will do my best on the pitch. I have high aims and goals with Al Wasl and I’m looking forward to winning all of the championships and trophies here.
“I’ve watched Al Wasl’s matches and they have great players and supporters. We will work together in the future to help and support Al Wasl.” Club chairman Abdullah Hareb Al Falahi commented: “His physique and height will support the team in the final third of the field.
“Our coach (Banide) was interested in the player’s talent, his style and how he will help us next season. All of these circumstances and facts led us to a contract with him.” Kaio started out with Atletico Paranaense in his native country prior to joining Cerezo Osaka in the J-League on a season-long loan. He then moved on to Yokohama on a temporary basis.
