China's magnificent 8 out of 8

A magnificent 8/8. This was the balance sheet statement of the Chinese dominated diving events at the ninth Asian Swimming Championships which concluded on Sunday at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex.

China completed their sweep of the diving events, claiming a brace of golds in the final two events on the final day which had the water polo finale slotted later in the night.

Having pulverised the opposition in the swimming, synchronised swimming and diving events, China, not taking into account the title rounds of the water polo finals, finished on a high-48 in the gold medal rush. China were up against Kazakhstan in both the men’s and women’s water polo summit clashes late on Sunday.

The closest nation behindthe world powerhouse in thesportwere Japan with three golds in the swimming event. In the concluding day’s afternoon diving medal round, China’s Chen Ye and Qu Lin topped the podium in the women’s 3m synchro final with a total of 321.90 points. Their fourth of five dives, a forward two and a half somersault with one twist pike, saw them notch up 73.80, the highest of the afternoon, according tothe officialtechnical analysis.

Japan’s Fuka Tatsumi, who claimed bronze in the 10m platform final and Yuka Mabuchi took silver with 270.69 while Malaysia’s Jun Hoong Cheong and Zhiayi Loh claimed bronze with 255.27.

This is Cheong’s third bronze in as many days, having also reached the podium in the individual 3m event yesterday and the 10m synchro event, with Loh the day before.

In the other final of the day, it was Wu Jun who added to China’s impressive gold medal haul. Wu finished on 541.35 points to add the individual 10m platform title to the 10m synchro crown he won on Saturday.
