Dubai — Glory Xavier was crowned champion after her superb net 64 gave her victory by four strokes over Suresh Shewakramani in the ninth round of the Mashreq Medal Championship in association with BMW and Harvey Nichols Dubai at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.
Despite the summer conditions the popular member’s event boasted a field of just under one hundred players. Event partners BMW added even more value to this month’s event with a BMW 1-series car as the prize for the hole-in-one competition on the par 3 14th, along with a BMW 7-Series weekend test drive vouchers up for grabs for the Beat the Pro competition winners.
To make this event extra special, the winner would receive the ‘Luckiest Ball on Earth’, which would be there ticket into the qualifying event for this year’s DP World Championship Pro-Am.
Caetano Fernandes, senior vice-president and head of Mashreq Gold said; “It was fantastic to see so many golfers enjoying themselves on the course today despite the hot conditions, there was some great competition and some very strong scoring, congratulations to all the winners.”
After receiving her trophy and prize Xavier commented: “I would like to dedicate this unforgettable win to my family and friends in golf. Their confidence in my abilities truly inspired me to achieve greater heights. A very special thanks to my coach and all the staff members of the club for their support and continuous encouragement.”
The best gross score of the day came from Max Burrow who carded a superb 1-under par 70 to beat Miki Mirza by a single stroke. Samy Eldin scored a two under par 69 to collect first prize in the Men’s A Division beating Ashok Sindhu who scored 70 into second place. Suresh Shewakramani’s net 68 saw him collect the prize for first place in Men’s Division B ahead of UAE National player Mohammed Al Musharrekh who scored an excellent 69.
The Ladies Division was won by Chikako Inoue who shot a net 72, and the Senior Division prize went to Thakur Tolani who scored 69 to win for the second consecutive month.
During the prize presentation speech Stephen Hubner, Golf & Membership Services Manager at Dubai Creek said; “Enjoying full fields in the Mashreq Medal Championship has become par for the course these days and it really is wonderful to see the members enjoying the order of merit format so much. Many thanks to Mashreq Bank, BMW, and Harvey Nichols Dubai for their wonderful support, and congratulations to Glory Xavier on her fantastic score.”
