Shaw was found to have breached Article 2.1.6 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “pointing or gesturing towards the pavilion by a bowler or a fielder upon the dismissal of a batsman during an International Match”. The incident happened in the 35th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Shaw, after dismissing opener Sadeera Samarawickrama, gestured the batsman towards the pavilion.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Simon Fry and Shaun George as well as third umpire Enamul Haque. On Sunday evening, Shaw admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. As such, there was no need for a formal hearing.
