Shuttlers Akhil and Waqas emerge best

Akhil Pradeep overcame Roshan Joseph 21-20, 14-21, 21-18 in the boys’ under-16 years singles finals of the India Club-Western Union UAE Open Badminton Tournament 2012 at India Club last night.

In the men over 40 singles finals, Xavier Raphael beat James Varghese 13-21 21-19, 21-12.

In the men over 50 years doubles finals, Sunil Singh/Kamaludheen C. P. trounced Lalmoney K./Nizar Ahmed 21-18, 21-9.

In the men’s doubles finals, Rakesh Ramakrishnan/Shibil C. P. defeated Rohit Haridas/Mohammed Munawar 21-15, 18-21, 21-12.

On Thursday, in the men’s singles finals Waqas Ahmed downed Xavier Raphael 21-14, 21-13. A jubilant Waqas who flew specially to Dubai from Pakistan to play in this tournament said: “It is a great joy and I am very happy to win the men singles title of this most prestigious tournament in the region”.

In the ladies singles finals, Judith Meulendijks edged out Johanna Golizewski 22-20, 21-17 to win the crown.

In the men mixed doubles finals, Waqas Ahmed/Jayashree Nair pair beat Asep Andriana/Aileen Roesslers in a hard fought match that went into three sets 20-22, 21-17, 26-24.
