Iran won the 2019 Intercontinental Cup beach soccer tournament in Dubai with an emphatic 6-3 win over Spain in the final, while hosts UAE beat Russia 2-1 in extra time to clinch the third place on Saturday.
Spain, who beat Russia 4-2 in the first semifinal of the tournament on Friday, couldn't find any answer to Iran's superb display of skills in Saturday's finale.
The UAE, on the other hand, ended their campaign on a high with a dramatic winner in the extra time against Russia in the third-place playoff.
Earlier, Japan beat Egypt 7-2 in the fifth place playoff while Italy beat Mexico 3-2 to finish seventh in the tournament.. In their two previous appearances in the Intercontinental Cup, Japan had only managed seventh place, and although they were already guaranteed a better position, they didn't hold back in taking fifth.
Who else but Ozu to blast in the first after four minutes, then Yamauchi and Okuyama pushed the lead to three going into the second period. A Costa own goal made it four soon after the restart and even when Shika hit Egypt's first, Matsuda was on hand to send a low shot zipping into the net for five.
Shika slid a second into an unguarded net for the Pharaohs but Oba pounded in his fifth of the tournament, equalling Gori and Akbari's total at the top, and Matsuo put away a seventh for Ruy Ramos' men to clinch a more-than convincing fifth place.
