Indian volleyball legend K. Udayakumar died following a massive heart attack at his work place in Kerala — the Raj Bhavan — close to noon time on Friday. He was 54.

The former captain of the Indian team and a senior Kerala Police official, was the Aide De Camp to successive Governors of Kerala since 2002.

Udayakumar, a member of the bronze medal winning team at the Seoul Asian Games in 1986 played in the company of other greats like the George brothers — Jimmy and Jose, and Cyril C. Valloor during a time when the sport was at its pinnacle in India.

He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1991.
