A husband divorced his Saudi wife hours after their wedding because she was too busy texting.
The groom took his bride back to their hotel room after the ceremony in the city of Jeddah. But according to local news reports, when he tried to get intimate with her, his wife refused to pay him any attention and instead continued to respond to congratulatory messages from friends on her phone.
The husband then asked the bride whether he was more important or her friends. "She said they were," which wounded his pride and the groom ended up leaving the hotel in a huff.
The matter has gone to the court, which has referred the case to the reconciliation committee to see if the two can make things work but the groom is too wounded to make amends.
The Daily Mail reported that in Saudi Arabia around 50 per cent of divorces involved newlyweds.
According to local newspaper Al Araby, there are 'eight divorces an hour' in Saudi Arabia.
The figures while shocking come straight from the Saudi Ministry of Justice. The number of divorce cases registered in the first six months of 2015 was 33,954. There were 11,817 marriages.
According to Arab News, Social media networks including Facebook and WhatsApp are playing a big role in increasing the number of divorce cases in Saudi Arabia.
Dubai legal experts have warned that social media is wrecking marriages. Addiction to the Internet and online flirting account for over 50 percent of marital disputes recorded in the emirate. Many of these disputes, at times, even get aggravated to the level that they turn into a physical assault, verbal abuse or even end up with couples seeking divorce.
This is not the first strange reason for divorce in Saudi. A Saudi man divorced his wife because she refused to close the car door. In another bizarre circumstance, a Saudi woman divorced her husband after he told her not to wear contact lens. Another Saudi man reportedly divorced his wife after he found her crying over the exit of a contestant in a reality show.
