A crane collapsed at an under-construction building in Abu Dhabi and crushed several cars.

The incident occurred in the Tourist Club area of the capital on Monday afternoon.

The Abu Dhabi Police said on Tuesday that the civil defense, rescue teams and police patrols rushed to the site after the central operations room received a report on Monday afternoon notifying them about a crane that had fallen from a building under construction.

No person was injured in the incident.

Brigadier General Mohammed Mayouf Al Ketbi, director general of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Department, said seven cars parked nearby were damaged in the incident.

The damaged cars had been parked in the street parking spaces near the building.

The cause for the collapse of the crane has not been revealed yet.

Al Ketbi has urged owners of construction companies and contractors to fulfil all the necessary safety requirements at the work sites and to ensure that cranes and other machines used in construction are maintained periodically.

Hassan Akram, an Indian resident who witnessed the incident, said he was shocked when he had the loud sound of the crane.

"I was standing at a nearby building when I heard a loud sound of something collapsing. At first I thought it was a building that has fallen down," he told Khaleej Times.

"But when I went closer, I realised that a crane had collapsed. The building workers and residents were shocked by the incident, but luckily no one was injured in the incident."
