An Uzbek man has been charged in absentia in the Court of First Instance for duping and defrauding an Egyptian woman.
The 26-year-old defendant, identified as S.S, took Dh65,000 from the complainant after falsely claiming that he was the owner of a flat and offered it for rent on a popular website.
S.S., who is at large, has been allegedly helped by a woman compatriot, 34, identified as G.A., who played the role of translator and accompanied him to reassure the victim and make her sign the tenancy contract and pay the money.
According to prosecution records, S.S. forged copy of the property title certificate and falsified its details and gave to the tenant.
S.S. has been accused in the Court of First Instance with fraud, forgery and use of official forged document and G.A. has been charged with aiding and abetting him in those crimes. The complainant, a sales manager from Egypt, said she first paid S.S. Dh 3,500 as a deposit. "I paid him the amount after he claimed he was the owner of a flat I wanted to rent."
On January 6, she went to the real estate company where she was supposed to sign the tenancy contract but they then asked her to go to a restaurant in Marina.
She signed the contract and paid S.S. Dh 65,000 and was given a receipt. She was given the key of the apartment in Al Barsha.
The following day, she went to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to complete the necessary transaction and tried to contact G.A. but the latter did not answer her calls. On January 11, the building management informed the complainant that her tenancy contract was forged.
Later, she learnt that she was the victim of a fraud and that she was not the only one. A police officer quoted the complainant as saying that G.A. answered her when she first called the number posted in the advertisement on the website.
"She later met her and another man and paid them Dh 65,000, worth of the total rent". The hearing has been adjourned to December 6.- mary@khaleejtimes.com
