They look like mini gold chandeliers, but what the yellow metal lovers in Dubai saw on Thursday are perhaps the largest gold earrings in the world.
Three sets of mammoth earrings - each pair weighing over 1kg and costing around Dh200,000 - were showcased at the Karama outlet of GRT Jewellers in the run up to a record attempt by the Indian group.
Whether a record will be engraved in gold or not, there was a crowd scrambling to get a glimpse of popular South Indian actress Nayantara, who unveiled the monumental pieces of jewellery.
Designed in the traditional Indian 'jhumka' style, the handcrafted 22carat earrings have been displayed to pay tribute to the City of Gold and to commemorate GRT's successful journey of 50 years, said G.R. Anand Ananthapadmanabhan, the group's managing director.
"We wanted to impress Dubai with something special and big. ," he told Khaleej Times.
While no customer is likely to dare hang the one-to-two-feet-long ornament on their earlobes he said, the firm is open to selling the collectors' pieces.
The firm wished to apply for the Guinness World Record for the world's largest gold earrings as well. "To my knowledge, nobody has made such big earrings so far. We are thankful to Nayantara for unveiling them to the enthusiastic crowd here and making it a success. "
