A gritty, quick-acting cop jumped into the menacing water current of Al Beeh Wadi to rescue three families - comprising Emiratis and Asians - stuck in the flash floods, triggered by thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, in Ras Al Khaimah on Sunday night. Speaking to Khaleej Times, 25-year-old Salem Hussain Al Huti, a staff cop with the RAK Police, said the central operations room alerted them that eight people, including women and children, were stranded in their vehicles due to the seasonal heavy showers. "A team of four cops, including me, rushed to the scene in a Land Cruiser equipped with all necessary rescue facilities."
Two of the three vehicles stuck in the water were of Emirati families, while the third was of an Asian, he added. "I first calmed the panicked families, jumped into the fast running water of the valley, tied the three cars, one by one, into the police SUV, and towed them to safety in 30 minutes." It was not an easy job, particularly with the strong current and flooding water, he pointed out. The RAK Police had received reports about eight vehicles stuck in the same valley. The three rescued were the most vulnerable and risky. "If we had arrived late, one or some of these vehicles might have flipped over or been dragged by the strong water current," the cop pointed out. Al Huti said he was only performing his national duty. "Rescuing people is part and parcel of my work and I am more than ready to sacrifice my life to save others."
