A young motorist has been charged in court for 'almost running over' a police officer and 'intentionally' ramming a patrol vehicle.
The 23-year-old Arab man was reportedly pulled over because of violations in his car's set-up. And when he learnt that his vehicle would be impounded, he sped off, hitting the cop in front of his car and crashing into the patrol during a chase, records of the Dubai Court of First Instance show.
The incident, which dated back to November last year, was registered in case filed at Bur Dubai police station.
"His car was causing nuisance and had excessive modifications and tinted glass. He confessed he had no permission for those modifications," a police sergeant said, recounting the incident that happened on Jumeirah Road.
He then told the motorist that they would impound his car. "I stood in front of his car to check the front registration plate; told him to lock the car; and hand over the keys. But he drove his car suddenly while I was standing in his way. He could have run me over had I not moved away. He hit my left hand as he sped off."
The sergeant and his patrol colleague followed the motorist and ordered him to stop. "He swerved instead into our car and intentionally hit it from the left front side. We kept following him until he reached his house. When he got inside, we called for back-up."
The other policeman corroborated the sergeant's statement during the public prosecution investigation.
The defendant admitted to the prosecutor that he did ram the patrol car. The crash caused damage worth Dh4,574, records show.
A ruling will be issued on August 12.
