A tourist, who stood trial on the charge of assaulting and resisting an on-duty police officer, has been cleared by a Dubai court.
The Saudi tourist, 39, has also been acquitted by the Court of First Instance of the charge of damaging a public property for he was accused of tearing up the officer's uniform. He earlier denied the charges at court, claiming he was under the influence of alcohol and did not recall the incident. The case dates back to May 4 in Al Rafaa.
The policeman told the prosecutor: "We were alerted about a fight at a night club. The accused was there with other persons. He was agitated and was being restrained by the security guards there when he tried to assault the other men."
The officer added that when the accused did not respond to his instructions of going inside the patrol car, he pulled him to get him inside the car. "But he then grabbed me by my uniform and tried to reach to the other men. He tore and damaged my uniform. He obeyed us when we handcuffed him."
The officer's colleague testified that the other men were not willing to press charges against the defendant and his friend. "But we arrested those two as they were drunk. The defendant's accomplice filmed me while inside the police car. The other officer took and seized his mobile phone."
He corroborated his colleague's statement on the assault. The defendant's accomplice was referred to the Court of Misdemeanors. The court ruling may be appealed.
