As many as 220 newborns were named Zayed last year, which was celebrated as the 'Year of Zayed' to mark the 100th birth anniversary of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the UAE.
According to Al Ittihad newspaper, the total number of newborns in Abu Dhabi's Corniche Hospital last year was 5,477 babies. Among them, 3,250 were Emiratis.
Saeed Al Qahtani, a Saudi man who named his baby after Zayed, said that he and his wife were visiting the Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival in Abu Dhabi when she gave birth, in December.
He had wished that his baby would be born during the 'Year of Zayed', adding that he is honoured to name his son after such a great person who was the leader of everyone, not just of the people of UAE.
