Ras Al Khaimah - The police are considering changing speed limits to better manage traffic and prevent accidents.
Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, Director of the traffic and patrols department at RAK Police, said the move is in response to several public complaints about speeding drivers on internal roads.
"Many fatal accidents have been recently reported on RAK's internal roads resulting in a number of deaths and casualties."
The traffic and patrols department is to reduce speed limits on these roads in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the Department of Public Works, he added.
"The department is also working on some feedback from drivers about the speed limit of some roads, including the Rams Khor Khweir road."
The speed limit on this road is 120kmph, however the road sign says 80kmph, he elaborated.
"This was actually a local road, but has been developed into a federal road, and hence the speed limit has been changed."
The traffic and patrols department has immediately changed the speed limit entered into the fixed and mobile radars on this road to fit the new limit, he revealed.
"The ministry of infrastructure development has also been asked to change the speed limit road signs so that drivers are aware of the new speed limits."
Recently, four teenagers, aged 18, 10, 10 and 18 years old were killed in a tragic road accident in Ras Al Khaimah.
"The mishap was mainly blamed on speeding."
