Three female drivers have started piloting buses in Dubai from July 3, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed. The authority said it has recruited the first batch of female bus drivers, who have got behind the wheels on its internal bus network.
The RTA said it is the first entity in the region to take this initiative. "This step creates job opportunities for women in a field dominated by men," said Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the RTA's Public Transport Agency. "This initiative is unprecedented in the Middle East region. The step is also compatible with the RTA's principle of empowering women and achieving gender balance across various jobs."

The women have been deployed on three routes: Circular Route 77 linking Baniyas, Deira City Centre, T1, and T3; Route F36 - a metro link between Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Science Park and Al Barsha South; and Route F70, a metro link service that shuttles between Burjuman, Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi.
The RTA has 165 women driving taxis, 41 chauffeuring limos and one behind the wheels of a school bus.
