A new automated system to detect mobile phone and seatbelt violations will launch from January 1, 2021, Abu Dhabi Police said on Friday.

A video issued by the authority on its social media channels warned drivers to refrain from using their phones while driving and to remember to wear their seat belts in order to avoid consequences.

The video — which was dubbed in four languages (Arabic, English, Malayalam and Urdu) — reminded drivers that their safety as well as that of all road users in the capital was a priority.

Called Vehicular Attention and Safety Tracker (VAST), the system is aimed at reducing road accidents and enhancing traffic safety in the capital.

The radar monitoring system aims to capture high-resolution images through artificial intelligence-powered cameras. An automated process analyses the images to detect seat belt and mobile phone violations.

Errant drivers will get an SMS notification of the violation, directing them to rectify their behaviour.
