Johnny Depp's infamous Jack Sparrow character is nowhere to be seen in the just-released trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, despite being a staple of previous installments. Instead of focusing on Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow, Disney has instead decided to give viewers a look at the villain, played by Javier Bardem. The trailer begins with a glance at some of the series popular characters like Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffery Rush and Tia Dalma, played by Naomie Harris. The trailer is darker than what you would expect from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It shows a savage attack on a ship flying the Union Jack until Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar enters and eerily tells the lone survivor to "Find Sparrow for me, and relay a message from Captain Salazar. Tell him death comes straight for him." Hooked yet? The official synopsis of the film says this:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea ... including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
So this begs the question, was the omission for the most important character a ploy to increase viewers suspense? Or to draw attention away from Depp's legal trouble, most recently being his drawn out and much publicised divorce case with ex-wife Amber Heard. But here's what producer Jerry Bruckheimer has to say:
