Dubai Police are one step ahead of criminal gangs both in the real world and online. Smart technology like AI coupled with beat policing methods give them the edge in solving complicated cases. Online surveillance systems combined with crack teams on the ground have ensured criminals are snared before they can even plot their next nefarious operation. Thursday's arrest of two Instagram celebrities and 10 others who ran a global cybercrime network that had defrauded Dh150 million from people proves no criminal can slip under the Dubai Police's radar for long. The gang had laid out a grand scheme to steal Dh1.6 billion from people using fake websites and IDs, but were stopped in their tracks before they had wrecked more lives. The latest operation followed a series of successes by the police force that has constantly innovated and perfected their skills to take down criminal syndicates that have attempted to use the city as a base. These criminal networks use the Dark Net and other black digital crevices but have met their match in a futuristic police department that is way smarter than them. Two of the criminals apprehended by the Dubai Police Swat teams were Instagram celebrities and flaunted their ill-gotten wealth on social media. Police teams were quickly on to them using AI that was deployed by the cybercrime unit.
Digital crimes are a rising concern and Dubai Police understands the challenges more than any other global force. The force is nimble and has extended its reach using cyber tools while also having an ear to the ground. It has also maintained relationships with different stakeholders and communities in the emirate, and the speed of detection and solving crimes is to be commended. A double-murder was solved last week in just 24 hours and the suspect was put behind bars. Raymond Abbas, Nordin EH, Amir Faten Makki, Ridouan Taghi are some of the dreaded names who found themselves in the Dubai Police net in recent months. They were wanted for crimes as varied as murders, cyber fraud, drug trafficking, human tracking and had hoped to spread their wings in Dubai but their luck quickly ran out with the police on their tail. Teams gathered evidence, while not letting them know that they were being followed, or their activities were being tracked. Dubai, a global city, has prided itself for its international connections, and the force used their friendly ties with law enforcement units in other countries and the Interpol to connect the dots of various criminal activities to tighten the noose on the suspects. The high strike rate of the force in solving crimes and preventing activity that threatens public safety can be attributed to the many global partnerships and local relationships they have forged over the years. Criminals have been put on notice. There is no escape from this force. The only option is to surrender and to pay for their crimes.
