IN HIS first Christmas message, Pope Benedict XVI has called for peace in the Middle East asking his followers to pray for the birthplace of Jesus (Palestine) and for the men and women who suffer there. While the annual message of the spiritual leader of the Christian world invariably calls for peace in the land that is sacred to the followers of all three Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, the homily this year comes at a time when there is great turmoil in the Middle East.

Peace not only evades Palestine, the birthplace of Jesus and other noble messengers of God, but the entire region. While the Palestinian-Israel peace process has failed to move forward, a bloody war has been raging in the neighbouring Iraq with no end in sight.

At times like these, faith is hardly mentioned. But faith can indeed bring people together and heal old wounds. Faith can show us a way out. It's a great tragedy that the land that is holy to all of us — Muslims, Christians, and Jews — has been witness to so much bloodshed and the world's oldest conflicts. When will we come together to bring peace to the holy land?
