The battle to save Yemen is still on, now with the UAE forces in the lead. The UAE has also led from the front in providing humanitarian assistance and has allocated Dh300 million to help Yemenis in distress. This accounts for more than 30 per cent of the total aid provided by the global community. But the scale of crisis in the country perhaps requires more helping hands.
On Saturday the United Nations sent out another SOS for Yemen. It says more than 21 million people in the country are in need of help, and are deprived of food and other basic amenities.
The World Food Programme has said that food shortages and low fuel stocks have created a "perfect storm" for the Yemeni people. The aid agencies and humanitarian assistance groups are unable to reach many areas because of the ongoing violence. Millions of people are languishing on the frontiers and have been rendered stateless.
A troubled Yemen is a global headache - as the strong presence of Al Qaeda in the country had proven until recently. It is, therefore, in the interest of global community to help end the battle soon and simultaneously start rebuilding the parts that have been freed from the Houthis.
The UAE has provided help with both forces and finance. So has Saudi Arabia. More countries need to pool in soon, because the peace dividend will be global.
