Great leaders build great institutions and nations. They groom talent and nurture potential in their people. Their deeds live on for generations. They are venerated because no aspect of life is left untouched by their commitment to make the country great. It is a moral duty above all else. The UAE's Founding Father and first President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was one such leader. In fact, he was a leader nonpareil who practiced what he preached and believed there were only solutions while not dwelling on problems that confronted a young country. He never lost faith in the power of reconciliation and shunned the politics of confrontation that was the norm those days; he stood steadfast when it came to unity while others sought to divide along racial and religious lines. That UAE is steeped in the ideals that Sheikh Zayed brought to life.
In oneness lies greatness, and he insisted on people, communities and society coming together to make a difference to the world. This is the message on his centenary. The word great is often misused, but it is apt for Sheikh Zayed, because he was one leader who believed in the greater good, in the universality of brotherhood and sisterhood. What he brought to the table was enduring, ethical leadership. It remains a template for governance with a conscience in a region that has been roiled by many conflicts. His was leadership with a heart and his determination to rise above the circumstances is inspiring to many. He stands out in the pantheon of greats. More importantly, great leaders remain grounded, they have their ear to the ground. They listen and act. It takes simplicity and humility. You never forget where you came from, your origins, the soul of your being, and Sheikh Zayed understood it like no other ruler. His one quote is telling: "No matter how many buildings, schools and hospitals we build, or how many bridges we raise, all these are material entities. The real spirit behind progress is the human spirit, the able man with his intellect and capabilities." Indeed, Sheikh Zayed's leadership was spirited, it was robust - a gift the UAE can be proud of for generations to come.
