Dubai Chess and Culture Club's Ahmed Fareed finished second with six points in the under 18 category of the first Arab Chess Olympiad in Morocco on Friday.
On the way to his silver at the Arab event, Fareed won six straight games, before losing to Egyptian Fide Master (FM) Adham Fawzy in the final round. Fawzy eventually won the gold, while Algeria's Abderrahim Bouhadi picked up the bronze medal. The UAE's Marshool Hamdan placed fourth. Fareed also won the bronze medal in the under 16 category of the Arab Age Group Championships and picked up a silver medal on second board at the Asian Cities Chess Championship - Dubai Cup this year.
For Fareed, this performance comes as an important tune-up for his participation at the World Youth and Cadets Chess Championships 2015 in Greece later this month. "Ahmed Fareed has been one of the most consistent junior players of the UAE, having won several awards for the country in various international competitions," said Najid Saleh, head of Technical Committee at the Dubai Chess & Culture Club.
"His impressive performance at the Arab Chess Olympiad sustains the momentum as he represents the country once again at the prestigious World Youth Championships in Greece this month. Dubai Chess and Culture Club will continue to provide him and other up-and-coming players the needed training and tournament exposure to help them achieve excellence and serve as inspiration for the UAE's sporting community."
