Su-Wei Hsieh doesn't go by the book. At a time when the players love to hit with power from the baseline, the 33-year-old Hsieh likes to add her delicate touch to the sport with her slices and spin to give herself a chance against the big hitters.
It's an approach that has earned her wins over big names - Simona Halep and Garbina Muguruza.
And here at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Hsieh added two more names to her list of big scalps - Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova - with her unorthodox style.
But Hsieh also takes a different approach when it comes to working with her coaching team.
The world number 31 has two coaches. And remarkably, one of them is her own brother while the other is her boyfriend.
"My brother and my boyfriend are both helping me," Hsieh said after her dramatic 6-4 1-6 7-5 win over Pliskova.
"My brother normally comes with me every European season. Last year he was helping me more after Wimbledon.
"He started to travel with me for the US Open circuit and the Asian circuit. You know I try to get the Su-Wei team now."
But she admitted that the partnership with her brother is not devoid of the typical sibling squabbles.
And that's when her boyfriend plays a big role. "When you work with family, that's something very naughty. Like, I don't really listen to my brother. So I tell my boyfriend, 'maybe you guys talk, he tells you something, you tell me that later'," she smiled.
Hsieh had more reasons to smile as she also reached the semifinals of the doubles tournament on Thursday.
Hsieh and her Czech partner Barbora Strycova beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands 6-2 6-4. But it was her stunning third set fightback from 5-1 down in the singles quarterfinal over Pliskova that gave her the biggest joy.
"I screamed like a baby. I was so happy. It was really tough to come back from 5-1 down because she serves big. So I am happy that I was able to fight back," Hsieh said.
