South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh looks set to wrest the overall Fina/airweave Swimming World Cup title away from his teammate Chad Le Clos this year, having established a comfortable points lead with just three legs of the eight leg competition to go.
The 27 year old South African is in blistering form and is on course to regain the title he last held in 2009.
The 2015 Swimming World Cup is being held over eight legs, and three clusters, with men and women vying for prize money and points in each leg and cluster. The overall male and female points winners will also take home $100,000 after the final and deciding leg will be held in Dubai on Nov. 6-7 at the Hamdan Sports Complex.
Le Clos competed in the first two legs of the Swimming World Cup in Moscow and Paris Chartres in August, winning five gold and one silver to sit second in the rankings behind van der Burgh after the first cluster, setting up what looked to be a battle royale for the overall title this year.
However, after competing in the All Africa Games in September, Le Clos decided to sit out the second cluster in Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore and has slipped to fifth in the rankings, while van der Burgh has put in some spectacular performances in every meet to now lead the overall competition with 237 points.
"Both Chad and Cameron have performed exceptionally well in Dubai in the past few years and we look forward to welcoming them back in just a few weeks' time for another exciting competition" said Ahmed Al Falasi, President of the UAE Swimming Association.
The next stop in the Fina/airweave Swimming World Cup schedule is Tokyo on Oct. 28-29, then Doha on Nov. 2-3 before the final and deciding leg in Dubai on Nov. 6-7.
The Swimming World Cup this year is being held in a 50m pool for the first time, as the event also serves as an Olympic qualifying event.
