Gautam Gambhir, who last played a Test match in 2014, looks set to don the India colours again as Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the third Test against New Zealand due to a minor fracture on his left hand.
The Indian cricket board later replaced Dhawan with talented young opening batsman Karun Nair in the 15-member Test team for the third Test in Indore which will start on October 9.
"The All-India senior selection committee have named batsman Karun Nair as replacement for injured opener Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian team. Dhawan has been ruled out of the third Test of the series against New Zealand after he sustained a minor fracture on his left hand," BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke said in a statement.
But it looks unlikely that Nair will get a chance to earn his first India cap in Indore.
Gambhir, who replaced the injured Lokesh Rahul after the first Test, is now the favourite to partner Murali Vijay at the top in the third Test.
Will it be a fairytale comeback for Gambhir?
Don't forget Gambhir had a series to forget when he last played for India in Test cricket.
The 34-year-old opening batsman managed only 25 runs in four innings in England in his comeback series in 2014.
In fact, he was so clueless against the swinging ball in England that legendary England opening batsman Geoffrey Boycott even called him 'rubbish'.
Gambhir missed the entire 2013 after he had struggled for form in 2012. And he was back in the cold after his nightmarish comeback in 2014.
Before his form began to trouble him, Gambhir had cemented his place as one of India's most successful Test openers with 4046 runs (average 42.58) and nine centuries from 56 Tests.
Now desperate for another comeback, Gambhir has been working hard in Indian domestic cricket and he has even come up with some very impressive knocks.
That's the reason why the selectors decided to bring him back after Rahul's injury against New Zealand in the first Test.
But the team management decided to play Dhawan in the second Test in Kolkata.
But now that Dhawan too has got injured, it seems Gambhir will finally get a chance to put his Test career back on track.
