LPGA Hall of Famer Laura Davies has thrown her weight around Dubai hosting the Solheim Cup, the women's equivalent of The Ryder Cup, saying that it would be a great place to watch golf of that magnitude.
The city is home to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the DP World Tour Championship - the final leg of the Race To Dubai, on the men's European Tour. On the women's side, Dubai has been hosting the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.
After the inaugural Dubai Desert Classic was played out in 1989, Dubai now boasts of nine golf clubs and 11 courses. There have been suggestions in recent years about the city hosting The Ryder Cup. And now, Davies, who represents golf in DUBAi, felt that Dubai was capable of hosting the Solheim Cup.
"I don't think it would be a bad thing at all. I think, yeah, because they are slightly different tournaments because people travel to Ryder Cups and Solheim Cups whereas galleries tend to be from local you get your normal galleries at normal tournaments from the locals but those two events, people will travel in to watch. I think the galleries would be huge over here because, No. 1, what a great place to come and watch a golf tournament of that magnitude," Davies said on Tuesday.
"The only trouble is, no one could play on either team, so they wouldn't have a home player. Whether it would work from that side, I wouldn'y but it would be a great place to come and play it," she added.
At 52 years, she is the 'Grand Old Lady of Women's Golf and she will be making her ninth appearance at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters which starts on Wednesday.
