Dubai has always been at the forefront when it comes to sports and fitness and although the sweltering summer is upon us, it hasn't stopped people from playing ball.
The ever popular Dubai Sports World (DSW), UAE's largest indoor sports venue opened its doors to its ninth edition at the Sheikh Saeed Hall at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Wednesday.
And with each passing year, it has got bigger and better with six new activities being added to the bludgeoning roster.
Italian Serie A giants AC Milan will run their academy at the venue that features 20 sports, with over 50 pitches and 14 professional academies.
Cricket also makes its foray along with volleyball, with the emphasis clearly on coaching. The other additions are fitness and cycling classes, trapeze, acrobatics, wall and rock climbing, parkour, martial arts and combat.
The events got going on Wednesday and will run for 16 weeks until September 10. The community initiative is being organized by the Dubai World Trade Centre in collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council.
And Saeed Mohammed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, was delighted with how the event has grown over the years.
"We are proud to see Dubai Sports World grow bigger and better each year," Hareb said on Wednesday.
"It serve as the ideal platform for people to come together in a safe environment to play sports. In fact, physical activity is known to promote inclusiveness and tolerance, and positively contributes to a healthier society. We want to encourage everyone to get involved and reap the benefits of such a great initiative," he added.
Meanwhile, Mahir Julfar, Senior Vice President, Venue Services Management, Dubai World Trade Centre, said:
"DSW has extended the boundaries of sport arenas to provide a suitable venue for people to play and compete. We look forward to another eventful edition."
